Our feet support us throughout daily activities such as walking, standing, and exercising. Regularly checking your feet can help you notice changes early and maintain good foot health. Here are five things you can look for when assessing your feet.

1. Skin Changes

Take a moment to look at the skin on your feet, including the heels, soles, and between the toes. Dry skin, thickened areas, corns, calluses, or changes in skin colour may sometimes develop due to pressure, friction, or other factors. Monitoring these changes can help you understand when a professional assessment may be helpful.

2. Nail Health

Healthy toenails are typically smooth and consistent in colour. Changes such as thickening, discoloration, brittleness, or nails growing into the surrounding skin may indicate an underlying issue. Keeping nails trimmed properly and observing changes over time can help support nail health.

3. Pain or Discomfort

Pay attention to any pain or discomfort in the heel, arch, toes, or ball of the foot. Some people may experience symptoms such as heel discomfort, pressure related pain, or tenderness while walking. Persistent discomfort may benefit from an assessment by a registered chiropodist.

4. Footwear Support

The shoes you wear every day can influence foot comfort and support. Footwear that fits properly and provides adequate support may help reduce strain on different parts of the foot.

When choosing shoes, you may want to consider features such as:

• Proper fit with enough space for the toes• Adequate arch support• Cushioning in the heel area• A stable heel counter for support• Shoes that are not overly worn out

Footwear that lacks support or fits poorly may contribute to pressure and discomfort over time.

5. Swelling or Changes in Foot Shape

Swelling, redness, or changes in the shape of the foot may sometimes occur due to pressure, injury, or other factors. Monitoring these changes can help you identify when a professional foot assessment may be appropriate.

When to Consider Seeing a Chiropodist

If you notice ongoing discomfort, changes in your skin or nails, or concerns about your foot health, an assessment by a registered chiropodist can help determine the cause and discuss appropriate management options.

Regular foot checks and use of the correct footwear for your foot type and lifestyle can be helpful steps toward maintaining overall foot health.
